Zach Elementary recognizes and respects the uniqueness of each child. The school's primary mission is to foster a love of learning in each student. At Zach our motto has been "Reaching high…Reaching out!"
This speaks to the commitment we have to maximize learning for all students. We need to have high expectations for both academics and behavior, and the school and home have to work together in a spirit of support and collaboration.
Students learn to follow their curiosity, to think creatively, and to work both independently and cooperatively with others. Just one of the many programs Zach offers students to apply these skills is Book Bowl.
What exactly is Book Bowl?
The primary objective of the Book Bowl program at Zach Elementary is to encourage reading among our students. Students in grades 3 and 4 are invited to participate in teams of 6-9 students at their grade level. Students will be given a list of 10 books to choose from. The students will only be required to read one, but will be encouraged to read more if possible. Each student will be assigned to a group which will include one to two adult coaches. Children that have a parent signed up to coach will automatically be placed in their group.
Each team will meet weekly with their coach(es) during the lunch hour to discuss the books. At the end of 6-7 weeks, the teams meet to face each other, in a panel format, for 2-3 matches
During the matches, the teams will work together to answer questions about the books. Correct responses will receive points and the team with the most points at the end of the matches will receive a prize. All students, coaches, and staff participating in Book Bowl will also receive a pizza party following the conclusion of the matches.
The primary intention of the Book Bowl program is to increase students' motivation to read. While the students will discuss the books in their teams with their coaches, the program differs from other reading programs in that it does not provide the in-depth discussions of literature as in classroom settings. Match questions are objective and factual, testing only a students' recall of characters, story events, situations, etc. Questions cover all written materials between the covers of the books.
Simply put, Book Bowl is a great way to make reading FUN!!
Maybe our next motto will be "Reaching....for a Good Book"!
